Count completed visits
Use the last month of actual attendance as your starting point. Include a class only when you attended and its price was part of the membership. Facilities you never use may be impressive, but assigning them hypothetical savings makes nearly any membership appear economical.
A new routine has less reliable evidence. A short flexible arrangement can help establish whether the gym suits your schedule before committing longer. An existing regular visitor can use their attendance history, while someone returning after a long break should allow for a different pattern.
Compare the same access
Suppose an illustrative membership costs $42 a month and a single visit costs $7, with no other charges. Six individual visits equal $42. Four visits cost $28 individually; eight cost $56. Joining charges, booking fees or separately priced classes would need to be added to an actual comparison.
Travel changes both money and attendance. A cheaper facility that requires a paid journey can cost more overall. An awkward journey can also make visits less likely. Put the realistic travel time and expense beside the membership price before deciding which location offers useful value.
Review the reason for keeping it
Check the hours you can attend and whether the equipment or classes you need are available then. Advertised facilities do not guarantee access at your preferred time. Read the minimum term and any pause, renewal or cancellation arrangements before making a commitment.
After a trial month, compare planned visits with completed visits and identify why they differ. A temporary busy week differs from a location that never fits your day. You may still value the atmosphere, motivation or social activity enough to accept a higher cost per visit. Make that choice explicitly. The purpose of the calculation is to show what the activity costs, not to insist that enjoyment must always be the cheapest possible option.
If classes are central to your decision, check whether booking limits make your intended weekly attendance achievable.
